Playboy Magazine Back Issues

Playboy is a magazine aimed at men and was created in 1953 by Hugh Hefner.

Playboy MagazinePlayboy is one of the world's most famous brand names. The flagship is the U.S. edition of Playboy magazine, but the Group publishes magazines around the world in different languages.

The magazine is released once a month in the United States, and contains photographs of naked women, in addition to varied articles on fashion, sports, commercial products, and often short essays by famous writers. The magazine is known to express liberal attitudes toward most political standpoint.

Collecting Back Issues of Playboy Magazine

Playboy is an American institution. It's not just about the beautiful nude women... Though obviously that's a pretty major part of the appeal... But some of the country's greatest journalists, writers and cartoonists have gotten their start in these Playboy magazine back issues. Hunter S. Thompson, Stephen King. Some of the great, classic interviews, articles and stories debuted in the pages of the magazine.

Arthur C. Clarke, Ian Fleming, Nabokov, the list goes on and on. If we were to list every great author who began in Playboy, we would be here all day.

The magazine has traditionally promoted a Libertarian viewpoint on social and political issues, always providing a voice of intelligence and reason amidst the rabid partisanship of many other magazines, and prioritizing freedom of speech and expression, as well as personal liberties, as the chief virtues of any political system.

Certainly, the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, a book focused on these very notions, was first published in serialized form in the pages of Playboy.

Interestingly, circulation of the magazine has actually taken a hit. The field it founded is now flooded with competition, from the stuff you can get on the internet to so called "lad mags" like Maxim and FHM. Still, in its prime, Playboy helped to define American culture. Without Playboy, none of these new challengers would ever have entered the ring as freedom of speech might not be enjoyed as it is today.

There have been so many bans placed on the magazine over the years. Even today, the magazine is censored or outright banned in many parts of the world, which goes to show just how freely we enjoy our liberties in the west.

But... Let's be honest. The reason we're really buying these magazines is... Well, because we're still a bunch of twelve year old boys at heart. It's great that Playboy contributed so much to western culture, it's great that they published that incredible interview with John Lennon and Yoko Ono, and we all respect that Hef is a real American character, but let's get down to business: Naked women are great.

This is an age where you can view any kind of nudity you would possibly want to see on the internet, but what that stuff is missing is the class and sophistication of Playboy. The centerfolds and photo spreads in Hef's magazine aren't just pornography. When you saw it at a certain age (and let's be honest, we all appreciated this stuff the most well before our eighteenth birthdays), finding dad's "girly books" was a moment of enlightenment. Sharing it with our friends and dreaming up sexual fantasies that, really, had little bearing on reality, because honestly, what did we know?

The camera didn't just document those women, it worshiped them. The lighting, what little clothing they wore, the setting, it's not porn, it's art, and probably the closest thing the modern age ever had to the classic nude paintings. Some people criticize all nude photography as being crass and even immoral, but that appraisal has never been more wrong than when it comes to Playboy. Anybody who considers Playboy to be misogynistic, or to say that it objectifies women, should probably take a moment to actually read the magazine, observe the pictures, and seriously ask themselves if it disrespects the fairer sex.

More than that, it's a point of nostalgia and of American freedom. Playboy is one of those magazines like TIME or MAD that's more than just its content, it's an American institution and an icon of what it represents. Playboy is not only a representation of the freedom of speech we enjoy in this country, it's also helped to shape the modern American definition of beauty: Class, sophistication, and a healthy hourglass figure. Playboy presents its models with a sense of admiration and respect, shying away from the "had work done" look so many other magazines embrace, and never portraying the women in an unflattering, crude or insensitive light. The modern publisher of similar content could stand to learn a thing or two from Playboy magazine back issues.

It's interesting to note, Hef started the magazine with a thousand dollar loan from his mother. So it stands to reason that the magazine stands for much, much more than simply "smut". Not only did Hef's mom help get the company off the ground, his daughter took over the management reins when Hef decided to call it a day. The magazine has a long history of being run by women, so while it is a male oriented magazine, the accusation of disrespect for women is simply absurd.
